The red hind, Epinephelus guttatus, is a member of the grouper or sea bass family,
serranidae, with about 370 species. About 20 species of grouper inhabit the tropical
waters of the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean. The red hind grows to a
maximum length of 2 feet. It lives around Bermuda, the Bahamas and in the
Caribbean Sea.
The 'Skipjack' is almost certainly an illustration of a bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix,
with the first spinous dorsal fin lying flat against the body. Bluefish are voracious
predators that live along the entire US eastern seaboard. They are found also in the
Mediterranean, off South Africa (where they are known as elf or shad), and along the
entire south coast of Australia (where they are known as tailor.) They grow to a
maximum length of over 3 feet and the largest weigh almost 30 lbs.
