which is the namesake of the croaker or drum family of fishes with about 210
species. Croakers are known for the croaking sound they produce. The Atlantic
croaker is an important food fish. It lives in warm temperate waters but avoids the
tropics. It is common off the coast of Virginia to northern Florida and along the
northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It grows to a maximum length of 20 inches.
Squirrelfish, Holocentrus adscensionis. About 10 species of squirrelfish are found in
the Western Atlantic. This species is found from North Carolina and Bermuda to
Brazil. It lives also in the tropical eastern Atlantic. It grows to a length of 1 foot.
