This fish was caught at King George Sound, Western Australia in December 1801. In this species
the males incubate the eggs and, in this striking painting, Bauer has drawn one of the two fishes
with a cluster of eggs under its tail.
Today, the fish is found commonly in southern Australian coastal waters.
