46. Flying Fish. Exocoetus sp. [W&M]
335 x 502 mm
Flying fish are widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical seas and it is impossible to be
certain where this particular fish was caught because no locality was recorded. In this painting
Bauer has drawn two views of the fish, the upper one showing its elongated pectoral fins
expanded and a second, lower painting with the pectoral fins folded. The enlarged pectoral fins
enable the fish to “fly” in the air for considerable distances which it does to escape from
predators.
