This painting by Bauer is important because Sir John Richardson based the first scientific
description of the fish on this drawing as the specimen was not preserved. Unfortunately, no
record now exists of where it was found and Richardson was only able to give the locality as
“Coast of Australia”! Today, it is commonly found on the southern coasts of Australia.
