Evening Primrose : Oenothera biennis L (grandiflora Bar.)
248 x 200
This is the third drawing that was not included in the Fothergill album. Bartram
describes his discovery of the plant in his Travels “Early one morning, passing along
by some old uncultivated fields, ...I was struck with surprise at the appearance of a
blooming plant, gilded with the richest golden yellow, stepping on shore, I discovered
it to be a new species of the Oenothera (Oenothera grandiflora)….perhaps the most
pompous and brilliant herbaceous plant yet known to exist….I have measured these
flowers above five inches in diameter”. P.406-407 Travels
