Pine-Barren Gentian : Gentiana autumnalis
246 x 188

William’s father, John Bartram, describes in a letter to Collinson how for many years
he had attempted to raise “this delicate flower” and eventually succeeded. This wild
flower was found by John and William while travelling in Maryland and is described as
growing “in a desert far from inhabitance”. It is very likely that this is an early drawing
by William that was sent to Collinson.
