Star Anise : Illicium floridanum
Bluets : Houstonia serpyllifolia
237 x 293
The Purple Finch is listed in Bartram’s Travels as Fringilla purpureus and as one of
the birds “agreeable to my observation, when on my travels ..” The Star Anise is the
earliest known drawing of this plant and was referred to by Collinson in his letter to
William in 1767. Thus dating the work as yet another of William’s early drawings.
