Eastern Diamondback : Crotalus adamanteus

Bartram encountered a similar rattlesnake when travelling with his father in East
Florida. “This serpent was about six feet in length, and as thick as an ordinary mans
leg.” Bartram killed the snake and brought it back to the fort where he was staying.
The commander governor Grant had it prepared for dinner but Bartram “tasted it but
could not swallow it. I however, was sorry after killing the serpent when cooly
recollecting every circumstance,. I promised myself that I would never again be
accessary to the death of a rattle snake,.” P.271-272 Travels
