In his Travels Bartram gave a sixteen word name to this bird, the mallard. This is a
splendid example of what has been described as his ‘lapse’ from the accepted rule of
binomial nomenclature. Most of the entries in Bartram’s list of birds are valid
binomials while his use of polynomials for uncertain species was a common practice
of the time.
