Banks Florilegium, Part 17, Plate 371

Cerbera manghas (Apocynaceae)

Line engraving by Charles White, after Sydney Parkinson (1771) and John
Frederick Miller (1774).

Joseph Banks and his party saw this species at:
Princes' Island, Java (6 January - 15 January 1771)

This tall evergreen tree has long veined leaves and large salver-shaped fragrant
white flowers with a red eye. The large fruit, somewhat like that of a mango in
appearance, suggested the name Mangas or Manghas. It is a coastal species
recorded from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, New Guinea and the Philippines.
